Meet Green Mobilisation Initiative (GMI)
Green Mobilisation Initiative (GMI) is a sustainable environment and development-focused Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) based in Abuja, Nigeria. Established in 2010 and registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), GMI is committed to restoring the harmony of Nigeria’s ecosystems and safeguarding biodiversity.
We design and implement programmes that address environmental challenges caused by activities such as indiscriminate bush burning, oil and gas exploitation, uncontrolled tree felling, excessive tillage, and land degradation. Our solutions also tackle solid waste management, promote renewable energy, and address pressing global issues like climate change, ozone depletion, desertification, and pollution.
Operating across all sectors of society, GMI places a strong emphasis on empowering local communities through Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) methods. These tools foster sustainable livelihoods, grassroots capacity building, and community-driven development, enabling people to take charge of their own environmental future.
Our Objectives
- Raise Awareness: Sensitize the public on the importance of caring for the environment.
- Build Capacity: Equip students, women, and residents in both rural and urban disadvantaged areas to address basic environmental problems and promote sustainable living.
- Develop Climate Solutions: Initiate projects and programmes to curb the effects of climate change and enhance global environmental well-being.
- Support Communities: Assist communities facing environmental degradation and work with institutions to advocate for their environmental rights and welfare.
Our Approach
To achieve these objectives, GMI has developed a working model that promotes public awareness and education by gathering and disseminating vital environmental information. We help local communities conserve biodiversity, manage natural resources, and protect fragile ecosystems, while encouraging active participation from all sectors of society and government.
Our youth-focused initiatives include special eco-programmes in primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions under the theme “Going Green”, which instills environmental ethics and values in the younger generation.
We have also implemented impactful projects such as:
Planting for Peace: Launched in July 2011 in public primary and secondary schools in Kaduna South, starting at Government Day Secondary School, Angwan Maichibi, Television, Sabon Tasha.Run for Trees: Ten thousand trees planted across 30 schools in collaboration with the Ogun State Ministry of Forestry, Abeokuta.Plant for the Environment: Conducted at Federal Government Boys College, Apo, Abuja, in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department of the FCT.Green Nigeria Schools Project: A tree planting sensitization programme in 77 secondary schools across the FCT, Abuja.Through these initiatives, GMI continues to be a driving force in building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Nigeria.
